Beartooth Highway—now a National Scenic Byways All-American Road—opened to the public in 1937 and has since become one of the most beautiful and popular byways in the United States. And why wouldn't it be? Winding through the Beartooth Corridor, the highway gives you views quite unlike any other. You can enjoy grandiose mountains that rise high above alpine forests, waterfalls, wildlife, and more. This 68-mile highway takes you through the most rugged drive at the highest elevation in the lower 48 states. You'll see breathtaking views nothing quite like anything you've seen before.
If you're traveling from the Bozeman, MT, area, you'll have to be committed to at least a full day (or more) of driving, depending on your pace. The Beartooth Highway begins near Red Lodge, MT, which is about two hours southeast of Bozeman. Then you start your 68-mile journey from Montana into Wyoming and finally ending your journey at Yellowstone National Park. Many Bozeman travelers decide to make this route part of a bigger trip to Yellowstone, instead of just a day-long adventure. The choice is yours. (Note that before you choose to drive the Beartooth Highway that you should check road conditions on the Beartooth Highway website.)
Make sure you've perused the Beartooth Highway's website and that you are familiar with what to expect. Pack plenty of snacks, water, and warm clothes to prepare for the high elevations, and don't forget your camera.
If you need a car rental to complete the journey, contact our staff at (406) 551-2277, or book online anytime. At Journey Rent-A-Car, we have a rental to meet your needs. You can choose from cars, minivans, SUVs, and more. No matter what you choose, you can rest assured that you'll be in for the drive of your life.
