Spring Break Weather in Yellowstone

If you’re considering a Spring Break trip to Yellowstone, you’re probably not looking for beach weather, and that’s good. The truth is that spring weather in the area can be somewhat unpredictable. Highs can range between the 30s-60s and lows well below the 20s. Additionally, snow falls regularly during the spring. Travelers do well to pack layers and plan lots of fun activities they can enjoy in the sun or snow.

Road Closures and Openings

Park staff determines when to open the roads inside Yellowstone Park. However, it’s not uncommon for them to at least open for bicycling, walking, jogging, and other non-motorized travel beginning in late March or early April. The road running from the North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance is open year-round. Therefore, you can expect to travel in your rental car, rental SUV, or another vehicle.

Animal Activity

Just like flowers and plants, animals also burst forth during the spring. However, the timing varies. Spring Break in Yellowstone falls in early spring. Some mammals emerge during this time. Certainly, activity increases as we enter deeper in May. As always, but especially in the spring, please be aware and safe around the animals who may protect their young and their food sources.

Lodging During Sprink Break in Yellowstone

Mammoth Campground is open in Yellowstone year-round. Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel generally offer “winter” lodging but close most of March and April to transition seasons. Most of the campgrounds and lodging options open in April, May, and June. Your best bet is to stay in Bozeman, Big Sky, or somewhere nearby and explore the park as part of your daytime activities.

Don’t Forget the Rental Car

Spring Break will be here before you know it. Whether you travel in late March, April, or May, you’ll find plenty to see and do in the area. Experience everything that Bozeman, Big Sky, and Yellowstone have to offer. But first, reserve your rental car. Call (406) 551-2277 to speak to a representative.
