Yellowstone National Park

Travel and Lodging

During the winter months, most of the roads in Yellowstone are closed due to weather. Fortunately, Highway 191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone is open year-round. Additionally, the road between the North and Northeastern Entrances to the park is always open, as is the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and the Upper Terraces. Mammoth Hot Springs General Store and Mammoth Campground are open year round; the remainder of the park’s roads, campgrounds, and stores begin to open in late April and early May.

What to Expect

Because of the elevation, Yellowstone’s weather conditions are highly unpredictable. Pack plenty of clothing layers and be prepared for snow, even in late spring and early fall. Many of the animals that reside in the park become more active in the spring and roam the park until late in the year. Visitors frequently encounter bear, bison, elk, and wolves and are encouraged to view the animals from a safe distance. Many visitors enjoy camping, hiking and biking during the warmer months. Snowmobiling and snowcoach tours are available throughout the winter months and provide incredible views of the park.
